Peter Welch of Vermont recognized ICC for its development of codes and standards and the building safety professionals who are responsible for their application in jurisdictions across the country. "Their work, largely unseen and often unnoticed, is critical to keeping Americans safe," Welch said. "The model building codes, developed by ICC members from all 50 states, allow every community to share the advantage of adopting building codes that are adaptable to local conditions, but at the same time incorporate the very latest research, materials, and building practices."

Building safety redefined.

Buildings today can meet societal and personal needs like never before, and standards are part of the picture, American Institute of Architects CEO Robert A. Ivey says in an interview with ASTM Standardization News. When asked how building safety will be redefined in this century, Ivey states, "In short, we believe that building safety in the 21st century has to be more comprehensive. Buildings should be safe not just with respect to basic life safety measures, but also safe for the environment, and safe for the health of occupants and visitors."

2009 IECC will be required for federal mortgage insurance.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and U.S. Department of Agriculture have determined that adoption of the 2009 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) for single-family homes does not have a negative impact on affordability, and will be the new baseline requirement for all homes eligible for FHA/HUD insured financing. Within 180 days, the Builder Certification form (HUD 92541) that contractors must sign to certify new homes are eligible for FHA/HUD mortgage insurance must certify that new homes meet the 2009 IECC. This requirement applies to all new homes, not just those in states that have adopted the 2009 IECC or better.
