ICC, RESNET to develop joint ANSI standard.

ICC and the Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET) are developing a joint ANSI standard to guide code officials on how to conduct residential air leakage, duct testing and airflow of mechanical ventilation systems. The International Energy Conservation Code requires air leakage and duct testing of homes, but does not specify test procedures. The standard will be based on a draft of BSR/RESNET/ICC 380-201x PDS-02 developed by the RESNET Standard Development Committee 300. Read more.

Significant changes to the 2015 IFC.

A modification to Table 1004.1.2 (Occupant Load Factors) of the 2015 International Fire Code (IFC) has been made which revises the mercantile occupant load factor and creates one factor for all floors. The change will allow all retail spaces — regardless of which floor level or what type of merchandise — to use a single factor of 60 square feet per occupant. (This information is excerpted from the Significant Changes to the 2015 International Fire Code.)

NOAA warns of strong and devastating storms.

Even though its predictions call for a below-normal Atlantic hurricane season with six to 11 named storms this year, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says strong and devastating storms remain a possibility. "A below-normal season doesn't mean we're off the hook," said NOAA Administrator Kathryn Sullivan. "As we've seen before, below-normal seasons can still produce catastrophic impacts to communities." Sullivan referred to the 1992 season in which only seven named storms formed, yet the first was Andrew — a Category 5 Major Hurricane that devastated South Florida.
