Significant changes to the 2015 IPC.

Installers often forget that the outlet of a temperature and pressure relief valve is a potable water outlet that must be protected against backflow conditions. A modification to Section 504.6 of the 2015 International Plumbing Code addresses the issue and states that the temperature and pressure relief valve discharge pipe termination must have an air gap suitable to protect the potable water supply distribution system of the building. (This information is excerpted from the Significant Changes to the 2015 International Plumbing, Mechanical and Fuel Gas Codes.)

What factors contribute to a resilient community?

Consumers use tools to understand the quality and risk associated with a product or service. To offer a similar informational tool for buildings, a new non-profit organization — the United States Resiliency Council (USRC) — was formed to serve as a credible, unbiased tool for local governments, building owners and others by providing information on the quality and risk associated with a building after a natural disaster. Simpson Strong-Tie, a USRC Founding Member, in a blog writes about resilient communities.

Feds say Southwest, Northwest could see major wildfires.

The Southwest and Northwest could face potentially catastrophic wildfires this summer, despite an unusually wet May over much of the nation, the federal government has warned. "We've been very fortunate here in the central part of the country to have above-normal precipitation to allow us to postpone the fire season," U.S. Forest Service chief Tom Tidwell said. But as the summer heat dries out forests and rangeland, the fire danger will rise, said Tidwell, who joined Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and Interior Secretary Sally Jewell at a news briefing.
