Fostering water conservation and efficiency in our communities.

Water sector organizations including the Code Council are participating in several events April 10-16 in Washington, D.C., as part of Water Week 2016. The purpose of the observance is for organizations and industry professionals to advocate for national policies that advance clean and safe waters to ensure a healthy environment. They will share perspectives, collaborate on solutions, meet with members of Congress and federal regulators, and celebrate achievements. For decades, ICC’s codes and standards have addressed water-related issues and the Code Council remains committed to working with Member jurisdictions and industry partners to bring water efficient products to market, labeling new homes and structures as more water efficient, and spreading the word about the need for smart water use. Read more and download the Water Week 2016 flyer.

APSP and NSPF boards agree to unify.

In a win-win scenario for the aquatics industry, the boards of the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals (APSP) and the National Swimming Pool Foundation (NSPF) met last week and agreed in principle to merge the two organizations. Both boards believe that the merger will better support the present and future needs of the aquatics industry, which has seen dramatic changes over the past 10 years.

Like ICC, APSP works with regulatory and legislative bodies to ensure that their codes, ordinances and legislation are written to the safest and most current standards. The International Swimming Pool and Spa Code (ISPSC) is the result of a ground-breaking partnership with APSP, and incorporates material from APSP consensus standards and relevant sections of the International Codes. It is the first comprehensive code to upgrade pool and spa safety, and meet the requirements of the Virginia Graeme Baker Act.

When it comes to fire safety, there is no compromise.

In the first half of 2015 alone, Dubai Civil Defence (DCD) responded to 193 fire incidents, an increase from 158 in the same period in 2014. This has spurred not only a review of the UAE's fire codes, but also a rethink of the construction industry's fire prevention and suppression systems. To reduce the occurrence of fire incidents, DCD has drafted a new list of standards and requirements related to the safety of tall buildings in the Emirates. Furthermore, the upcoming UAE Fire and Life Safety Code 2016 is expected to raise the standards for building materials used on future developments in the country.
