Georgia State Fire Marshal Dwayne Garriss, who serves as Vice President of the ICC Board of Directors, attended the White House Roundtable on Wildfires in the Wildland-Urban Interface.

Executive order calls for federal buildings to comply with the 2015 IWUIC.

President Obama signed an executive order requiring all buildings above 5,000 square feet located on Federal lands to be in compliance with ICC's 2015 International Wildland-Urban Interface Code (IWUIC). The Obama administration announced the executive order at the White House Roundtable on Wildfires in the Wildland-Urban Interface, which was attended by Georgia State Fire Marshal Dwayne Garriss, who serves as Vice President of the ICC Board of Directors.

This marks the latest in a series of White House support for resilient building codes and standards to address the impact of climate change and natural disasters. President Obama declared May as National Building Safety Month to recognize and pay tribute to those who ensure the safety and resilience of the nation's buildings, and to reaffirm the U.S. commitment to upholding and abiding by strong and effective building safety standards.

"Building Codes: A Smart Investment" is the theme for Building Safety Month week four.

The biggest investment most people will ever make is buying a home. Cutting corners on safety can hurt that investment, however, not to mention those living there. Homeowners could wind up spending more money if their construction projects do not comply with local building codes. The value of those investments could be reduced and property insurers may not cover work done without permits and inspections.

Have a say in ICC certification and education.

If you are interested in having a say in the governance of the ICC National Certification exams and/or the ICC Education program, now is the time to apply. ICC is issuing a call for new members to its Professional Development Council (PDC), which is comprised of two committees — the Certification Committee and the Education Committee. Each committee is made up of six members, who will meet separately and/or jointly as meeting items warrant. ICBO's Gene Zeller leaves many memories and a legacy of professionalism.

If there were certifications for being a great boss, friend and mentor, Gene Zeller would have dozens more to add to his resume. Family, friends and co-workers, even those who hadn't seen him in 20 years, felt the pain when they heard Zeller — the energetic, always genial pillar of the legacy International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) — passed away April 4 at age 78.
