A Special Project by:
The 2015 The Future of Code Officials—Results and Recommendations from a Demographic Survey notes our profession will be in need of a number of new leaders in the very foreseeable future to replace the 80 percent of current professionals who are planning on retiring in the next 15 years.
Recognizing the need to encourage and mentor the next generation of code officials and to provide for the continued education of individuals who seek a profession in code administration, the Past Presiding Officers (PPOs) of the International Code Council (ICC), have embarked on an effort to provide training and resources needed to address the critical need for future leaders in our profession. Our efforts are intended to assist in the preparation of a new generation of young professionals for the challenges that lay ahead.
The PPOs is an organization of all past presidents and chairmen of ICC and its predecessor organizations, who, combined, represent more than 300 years of experience in code administration and leadership in code development activities. One of our current activities is to identify the needed resources and to raise funds to support the education of new and emerging code officials. We hope this can be accomplished through training at the Annual Conference; programs for presentation at local Code Chapter Meetings; and offering scholarships that can be used to further the education of these young professionals in non/traditional educational areas for code officials. This may include courses in business, management, personnel training, and other skills aligned with the professional needs for the effective administration of codes and standards.
The PPOs will hold its fourth annual fund raising event, the Ron Burton Annual Golf Outing, in conjunction with the ICC Annual Meeting in Richmond, Virginia. This event will include a number of separate opportunities.
The Ron Burton Golf Outing celebrates the life and work of William Ronald “Ron” Burton. Ron, as you may know, was a renowned code expert. He worked on many code-related projects for ICC, BOMA and the NAHB.
The tournament will be a shotgun-start at the The Club at Viniterra, 8647 Angles Share Drive, New Kent, VA 23124. The tourney will include a 50/50 drawing*; prizes for the longest drive and closest to the pin; a hole-in-one contest; golf ball launching contest; and gifts for all participants. Transportation, breakfast and lunch will be provided.
In addition, as a part of the Conference activities, the PPOs will host an education forum, Journey to Leadership in Code Administration, for emerging professionals to outline the skills and abilities they will need to become expert code professionals.
We need your help to make this project successful. Please consider contributing to support our efforts.
