Health and Safety Scores in Abu Dhabi

The Department of Municipal Affairs (DMA) in Abu Dhabi signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Code Council‚ which officials hailed as significant progress for health and safety in the Emirate. DMA chairman HE Dr Ju’an Salem Al Dhaheri called the occasion “an important step to enhance construction standards in Abu Dhabi and safeguard the long-term security of the Emirate’s population.” more>>

CBCAG Act Receives Endorsements

The National League of Cities and the Alaska Municipal League sent letters of endorsement for the Community Building Code Administrative Grant (CBCAG) Act‚ while resolutions of support were adopted by the City of Scandia‚ Minnesota; the Northwest Wisconsin Building Inspectors Association; and the Building Officials Association of Louisiana. The number of organizations formally endorsing the legislation is now 147. Follow the lead of America’s First Preventers and support the CBCAG Act. more>>

The Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH) recognized the Code Council for the organization’s extraordinary support and commitment to FLASH and the mission of strengthening homes and safeguarding families. FLASH designated eight of its more than 100 partners as “Legacy” partners in recognition of its 10-year anniversary.

New ICC Foundation Board Meets in D.C.

The new ICC Foundation Board of Directors and working group convened for its 2008 Annual Meeting at ICC Headquarters in Washington‚ D.C. Members of the ICCF Board include: Code Council CEO Rick Weiland‚ who serves as president; Council COO Dominic Sims‚ treasurer; Council Board member Barbara Koffron; Ted Green of the Laborers International Union of North America; Don Pratt of the National Association of Home Builders; and Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH) CEO Leslie Chapman-Henderson serving as Managing Consultant. Members of the working group include Code Council Assistant General Counsel Mel Oncu‚ Certified Public Accountant Charlie Tate‚ and FLASH COO Eric Vaughn.

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) launched the newly expanded StandardsPortal‚ a tool to facilitate trade by helping companies better understand standards and conformance-related technical market requirements they face in the U.S. and Chinese markets. The International Code Council is one of the organizations on the portal. more>>

Spotlights Standards

The International Code Council and other standards developers came together in Washington‚ D.C.‚ to celebrate World Standards Day 2008. The theme for this year’s event‚ Intelligent and Sustainable Buildings‚ spotlighted the critical role of standards and conformity assessment programs in ensuring safety requirements; facilitating coordination among contractors‚ builders‚ engineers and architects; and incorporating new technologies in the design and construction of intelligent and sustainable buildings. The International Code Council is a sponsor of the event and a member of the U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day Planning Committee.

Code Question: Expert Staff Opinions

In accordance with the provisions of Section 508.2.2.1 of the International Building Code‚ when an incidental use area is permitted by Table 508.2 to be protected with an automatic fire-extinguishing system‚ fire barriers are not required to separate the incidental use area from the remainder of the building. Although fire barriers are not required, Section 508.2.2.1 contains prescriptive and performance requirements for the construction of the walls that separate the incidental use area from the remainder of the building. Are smoke dampers “required” in construction that is capable of resisting the passage of smoke? more>>

Code Commentary: Leading Perspective

Plumbing concerns are specifically mentioned in the ADA and its supporting documents and rules. The guidelines spell out how such items as drinking fountains‚ water coolers‚ urinals‚ bathtubs and other items need to be dimensioned and installed in order to comply with ADA regulations. And therein lies the rub. Just because something might be marketed as “ADA compliant‚” the fact is that almost every product’s compliance hinges strictly on how it’s installed. more>>
