ICC Hosts Meeting with Key Standards Developing Organizations

The International Code Council and representatives from several Standards Developing Organizations met to discuss how revisions to the Council's Code Development Process have impacted the standards developing community, and how the future of code development and digital technology will impact the industry.
The International Family of Codes references almost 1,400 industry standards, making the I-Codes the most effective method of delivering standards to the construction and real estate industry through state, local and federal adoptions. The combination of model codes and standardization lowers costs by reducing redundancy, minimizing errors and reducing time to market.

East Coast Earthquake Highlights Importance of Code Compliance

Last month's 5.8 magnitude earthquake in central Virginia that was felt along much of the East Coast and as far west as Illinois is a reminder why the continued development, adoption and enforcement of building codes and standards is vital to structural performance and public safety in seismic events. Unlike the annual U.S. hurricane season, earthquakes have no regular season and are not limited to geographic regions such as the western U.S.

Building Safety Codes Changed As a Result of 9/11
The 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center identified a new, challenging frontier in public safety for the International Code Council, the primary developer of construction industry building safety codes and standards used throughout the United States. The nation's building and fire codes historically have been responsive to tragedy, and have been reevaluated to address the consequences of natural disasters. The Code Council's activity heightened when the National Institute of Standards and Technology released its Report on the Collapse of the World Trade Center, which contained 30 broad recommendations for the model codes, standards industry, design community and emergency responders.   Joplin Recovering from the "Granddaddy of Them All"
The Joplin, Missouri, Building Department is swamped with work dealing with the aftermath of the May 22 tornado that ripped through the community. More than 2,000 buildings were leveled, another 2,000 rendered uninhabitable, with a total of 7,500 structures damaged. It has been called the "granddaddy of all tornadoes."

Code officials in regions not affected by tornadoes are encouraged to join the Code Council's Disaster Response Network volunteer force, a database of volunteers who are available to assist with building damage assessment, building inspections and other code-related functions.
