  Disaster Response Network Supports Communities Damaged by Natural Disasters
Anticipating the needs of jurisdictions for assistance in the aftermath of the Southern California wildfires, the Disaster Response Network is active. Jurisdictions can access a database of volunteers to assist with building damage assessment, inspections and other code-related functions. Jurisdictions can call the Disaster Support Hotline at 888-ICC-SAFE (888-422-7233), ext. 5238. More information is available on this page of the ICC website. Click on the "Disaster Network" tab in the "ICC Important Information" section.

Veterans Panel Advances Legislation on Safe Housing for Homeless Veterans

The U.S. House of Representatives Veterans Affairs Subcommittee on Health gave voice vote approval to the amended Safe Housing for Homeless Veterans Act (HR 2065) that would require nonprofits and state and local governments that provide housing and services to homeless veterans and receive operating money from the Veterans Affairs Department to certify annually that they comply with relevant codes, including building codes. The bill would set a two-year grace period for current funding recipients. Continue reading story

Download the Group B Public Comment Hearings Schedule
The 2013 Group B Public Comment Hearings (formally called Final Action Hearings) will officially open at 1 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday, Oct. 2, in Atlantic City, N.J. Download the schedule. Unless noted by "Start no earlier than XX a.m./p.m.," the hearing for each code will begin immediately upon completion of the hearing for the prior code. Actual start times for the various codes cannot be stipulated due to uncertainties in the progress of the prior hearings. The schedule anticipates that the hearings will be completed no later than 12 p.m. Eastern on Thursday, Oct. 10. Continue reading story

Significant Code Changes to the 2012 International Fire Code
A stationary LP-gas installation on the roof of a building is not allowed. The International Fire Code (IFC) adopts NFPA 58, Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code, by reference, and many of its requirements are linked to specific provisions in Chapter 61. Based on Section 6104.3.2.1, stationary LP-gas containers are not permitted on the roof of any building. The IFC requirement takes precedence over the NFPA 58 requirements because of the code text in IFC Section 102.7.1. Continue reading story

Starved of Credit, Construction Suppliers Lag Housing Rebound
U.S. homebuilders have booked higher orders for seven consecutive quarters, but a shortage of building supplies means construction is lagging demand. A wider housing market recovery has yet to filter down to regional building products makers — the companies that supply the roofing, walls and interior fittings needed to build these new homes. They are operating in a much tighter credit market, and with workforces pruned during the recession triggered by the housing market crash in 2007. Continue reading story
