MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT & CEO Celebrating 10 Years as a Consolidated Association During the past year, we have marked the 10th Anniversary of the International Code Council's consolidation of three regional organizations into a single association. Since the International Code Council was formed more than a decade ago, it has become the hallmark professional membership association dedicated to providing its Members and all building industry professionals with the tools needed to ensure the public's safety in the built environment. ICC is much better off today than it has been at any time in recent years. Our financial picture is improved. The smartest investment we made in 2013 was the creation and roll out of cdpACCESS—the new, cloud-based tool built exclusively for ICC's code development process (cdp). ICC MEMBER NEWS Snowmass Village, Colo., Adopts IECC, IgCC Snowmass Village, Colo., is being recognized as an early adopter of the newest codes that most aggressively seek to elevate energy efficiency and green construction. Only a handful of other municipalities in Colorado have adopted either of the 2012 codes: the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), and the other and broader International Green Construction Code (IgCC). ICC NEWS Code Council Plans to Update Blueprint to the Future for 2023 Blueprint to the Future is the International Code Council's long-term business plan that establishes the association's vision, mission and values, and sets clear goals and objectives for the association. The Blueprint was originally drafted in ICC's first year of operation as a consolidated association. It has been updated regularly. CODES CORNER Significant Code Changes to the 2012 IPC, IMC and IFGC Nail stations in nail salons must now each be provided with a source capture system. Based on the definition of a source capture system, the exhaust from a station in a nail salon is required to capture the air contaminates at their source and terminate them to the outdoor atmosphere. A minimum exhaust rate of 50 cfm is required at each station. Continue reading story |

ICC JOBTARGET Construction Jobs Increase But Still Below Peak Construction employment expanded year-over-year in the majority of metro areas and states, according to the Associated General Contractors of America. However, the gains in construction activity, and therefore employment, still haven't taken hold in all regions of the U.S. As it stands, construction employment rose in 215 metro areas between October 2012 and October 2013, declined in 74, and remained stagnant in 50 others, with only 21 topping previous highs for the month. INDUSTRY NEWS NIST: Stronger Building Codes Could Have Saved Lives in Joplin Tornado Recommendations in the National Institute of Standards and Technology Technical Report of the 2011 Tornado in Joplin, Mo., include: model building codes for new buildings require tornado shelters in accordance with the ICC 500 standard; model building codes develop and adopt a tornado shelter standard specific for existing buildings; and tornado shelters be installed in new and existing multi-family residential buildings, mercantile buildings, schools and buildings in tornado hazard areas.
