Knoxville, Tenn., Rural/Metro Fire Marshal Dan Johnson Named Code Official of the Year

For his dedication to thorough, regular fire inspections and fire prevention education, Dan Johnson, Rural/Metro fire marshal for Farragut, Tenn., was named Code Official of the Year by the East Tennessee Building Officials Association (ETBOA). The ETBOA Code Official of the Year Award recognizes individuals who are knowledgeable, hard-working and dedicated to their community and profession. Johnson has worked for Rural/Metro as the fire marshal for more than 12 years. He is actively involved in ETBOA, serving as president of the ETBOA board of directors in 2012, vice president in 2011 and secretary/treasurer in 2010. Continue reading story

Meet the cdpACCESS Team
The ICC Board and cdpACCESS Steering Committee are working with design and development professionals to build cdpACCESS, the new online platform for code change submittals, collaboration, and voting. To make cdpACCESS as user-friendly as possible, the Board and Steering Committee looked to design research and user experience experts Karen Faith and Nick Hahn. The duo has been travelling the country, meeting with the ICC community and connecting with future cdpACCESS users. Significant Code Changes to the 2012 International Residential Code
Braced wall line end conditions for continuous sheathing have been placed in one section. A fifth end condition is defined for braced wall panel connections. ICC Expands Online Offerings with ASTM Standards
For easy access and application for codes and standards users, the Code Council is collaborating with key standards developers and organizations, such as ASTM, to make the vast array of construction industry safety standards referenced in the 2012 International Codes available to the building industry on the ICC website. The latest series of standards from ASTM now available in the ICC digital standards library include more than 440 standards and five comprehensive collections pertaining to the 2012 codes. Report: Technology's Impact on Construction Trades Growing
A new report notes that technology's impact on skills requirements for construction tradespeople, apprentices and journeypersons is growing in leaps and bounds. Employers and trainers report that computer literacy is becoming a mandatory skill when it comes to hiring new workers, with the so-called "digital gap" set to become as much of an obstacle to those who are not tech-savvy as the "literacy gap" is to those lacking in literacy skills. From 3D software to simulation technology to social media, those in the skilled trades will be expected to be up to snuff on digital information, and those who are lacking in digital skills risk falling behind as the skilled trades move forward to keep in step with the newest technology. New Legislation Helps U.S. Veterans Get Construction Jobs
A measure letting Iraq and Afghanistan veterans use their military experience to get construction trades jobs in the city was signed into law April 2 by Mayor Bloomberg. The bill, which the New York City Council passed last month, lets vets use their time overseas doing similar work to qualify for licenses as plumbers and electricians. Certain construction jobs also are included. Many veterans struggle to find work when they leave the military. Post-9/11 vets face an 11.7 percent unemployment rate, compared with 7.9 percent for the population at large. Many veterans have found the experience and expertise they acquired in a combat zone isn't considered by employers as they search for jobs back home. Continue reading story
