Tomberlin: Our Future Looks Promising

Attracting, educating and energizing the next generation of code officials and industry leaders will be the focus of Guy Tomberlin's tenure as President of the International Code Council Board of Directors. To that end, Tomberlin brought up to the stage past ICC Board Presidents and other colleagues who have influenced his career. "It is often said we are only as successful as those who surround us, so it only makes sense to surround ourselves with these type individuals," Tomberlin said. "I would like to ask that you look around and identify who you think might be the next person or people to help ICC continue moving in the right direction, just as you have done. This is the time to commit to succession planning, mentoring and raising the profile. It is our responsibility to help implement a process that will motivate and inspire the next generation."

Jones: Working Together for the Good of All

ICC Board of Directors outgoing President Stephen D. Jones, CBO, told Annual Conference delegates he used the past year of his presidency to learn as much as he could about the association's 57,000 Members. What he found was a renewed interest in working together for the good of all. "What I found in traveling across the country is that we have shared challenges in the workplace," Jones said. "We all have been asked to do more with less. And somehow we do just that, because what we do matters. It is not about our self-importance. It is about building a safer world."

Survey of Code Professionals Predicts Substantial Retirement Exodus
A recent survey conducted by the National Institute of Building Sciences on behalf of the International Code Council reveals that code officials are aging and making plans for retirement in significant numbers. Nearly 85 percent of respondents are over the age of 45, and more than 80 percent expect to retire within the next 15 years, and more than 30 percent plan to do so within five years. Such a massive exodus of public safety professionals could have a serious impact on jurisdictions—particularly those with smaller departments—since more than half of the respondents work in departments of nine or fewer employees.
