Training & Member Forum Roadshow stops in Sacramento

International Code Council Board of Directors President M. Dwayne Garriss and Chief Executive Officer Dominic Sims hosted the third stop of ICC's Training & Member Forum Roadshow on July 17 in Sacramento. The event addressed topics of particular interest to California building and code professionals, and was held exclusively for ICC members interested in deepening their knowledge of the 2016 California Building Standards Code, Title 24. The Training & Member Forum Roadshow had stops in Los Angeles, Calif., Arlington, Texas, and Sacramento, Calif. The next stop will be on Sept. 11 in Columbus, Ohio.

Updated Building Valuation Data is available

The February 2017 Building Valuation Data is available. The Code Council strongly recommends that all jurisdictions actively evaluate and assess the impact of the data before utilizing it in code enforcement-related activities. The Building Valuation Data is updated in six-month intervals, with the next data available in August 2017. View the archives.

The IECC is changing the way builders insulate their homes

As more states adopt the 2015 International Energy Conservation Code, insulation is top of mind for many builders, who may have to change their current practices in order to comply. Recently adopted in New York state and Dallas, the new regulations include requirements for continuous exterior insulation and more stringent air tightness requirements.

High School Technical Training Program concludes its sixth year

Students from schools operating the International Code Council's High School Technical Training Program were among those competing in the 53rd annual National Leadership and Skills Conference (SkillsUSA) in Louisville, Ky. SkillsUSA is a showcase of career and technical education students. More than 16,000 people, including students, teachers and business partners, participated in the week-long event.

Significant changes to the 2015 IFC

An addition to Section 907.2.11.7 (Smoke Detection System) of the 2015 International Fire Code provides an option for using a smoke detection system in lieu of single-station and multiple-station alarms in Groups R-2, R-3, R-4 and I-1.

Nailed ledgers the cause of most deck collapses

A series of recent deck collapses that resulted in more than 50 injuries underscores the importance of thorough inspections of existing decks, says Virginia Tech Professor Emeritus Frank Woeste. Woeste has followed deck collapses since 2002 and thinks that 90 percent of deck collapses are caused by a failed — usually nailed — ledger connection.
