Industry Survey Cites Uniformity, Education and
Training as Top ICC Priorities

Responses in an International Code Council survey of Industry Advisory Committee members documented the benefits industry places on being part of the ICC Code Development Process and indicated a desire for even greater collaboration and coordination with ICC. Fifty-seven percent of survey respondents identified promoting uniform code enforcement as priority one. Fifty-six percent identified promoting uniform code adoption as a top priority. Survey respondents (34%) also said ICC should expand education and training programs for industry professionals. More than half (57%) of the respondents said they were interested in training and education for the components of building codes they find challenging. The research will help guide the committee to better serve its audiences. Click here for an overview of the Committee's March meeting.

I-Support Building Safety Month

Building Safety Month tells individuals, families and businesses what it takes to create and maintain safe and sustainable structures. The initiative reinforces the need for the adoption of modern model building codes, a strong and efficient system to enforce those codes, and a well-trained professional workforce to ensure public safety. Show your support by clicking on the "I-Support" tab on www.buildingsafetymonth.org and encourage your co-workers, friends and family to do the same. Also consider adding the "I Support" link to your Chapter or organization's newsletter or website.

Customer Call Center Returns

As part of its renewed approach to customer service, the Code Council will reintroduce the Customer Call Center on April 1. "Our organization continues to provide the tools and resources our Members and all customers need to perform their vital duties," said ICC CEO Rick Weiland. "Call center staff will be able to answer your question or quickly direct you to the right person who can." In addition to direct extensions, to reach the customer call center, dial 1-888-ICC-SAFE (422-7233) ext. 0.

Reaching across Borders

Building safety professionals looking to get more involved in the global community are encouraged to enroll in the new ICC Global Membership Council. "It is in our interest to reach out to our peers in the world community to listen to them and share our experience," says Council Chair Lynn Underwood. "By doing so, we will learn and grow together." One of those global peers is Michael Otechi Nyangweso of Kenya.

Maryland County Program to Include National Green Building Standard
Homes built in Anne Arundel County that conform to the Code Council's National Green Building Standard will now be eligible for property tax credits. The County Council passed a bill that expands the program already in place for green homes. Under the law passed in 2010, homes conforming to the U.S. Green Building Council's standards for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design are eligible for county property tax credits. The amount of the tax credit depends on how green the house is, per LEED standards, and homeowners could earn up to $15,000 in property tax credits. The new legislation allows homes certified under the separate National Green Building Standard to get the credits, as well.
