ICC Board advances association through partnerships, committee members & code development changes

The International Code Council Board of Directors met May 11 in Washington, D.C., in conjunction with a series of meetings held by the Inter-Jurisdictional Regulatory Collaboration Committee. The Council approved new strategic partnerships, appointed new committee members and reviewed changes to the code development process.

MBI & ICC to develop modular construction guidelines & resources

The Modular Building Institute (MBI) and the International Code Council are the driving force behind efforts to accelerate the use of modular construction and eliminate barriers in the industry by developing a series of modular-themed guidelines and resources for code officials.

Leading the way on high-performance construction & resilience

This month, the International Code Council was front and center at two events on Capitol Hill discussing high-performance construction and resilience — timely topics especially important as the U.S. Congress debates the President's infrastructure bill.

NIBS releases findings on workforce development

The National Institute of Building Sciences' (NIBS) Consultative Council released its 2016 report, Moving Forward: Findings and Recommendations from the Consultative Council, which contains detailed recommendations reflecting the consensus of the construction community on the topics of workforce development and water resources.

Emerging leaders plan for future expansion & involvement

The Emerging Leaders Membership Council Advisory Committee met May 21 during the ICC Training & Certification Summit in Arlington, Texas. Members discussed cdpACCESS, Annual Conference, involvement and representation in partnering organizations, and development of resources to help expand the Council.

Doll leads ICC's strategic communications

Bringing more than 10 years of experience in nonprofit communications and public relations, Whitney Doll was named Director of Communications. She will oversee the association's strategic communications initiatives and media relations program, and will work to solidify the ICC brand.

Significant changes to the 2015 IFC

A deletion to Section 5704.2.9.7.3 (Flame arresters on Protected above-ground Storage Tanks) states that flame arresters or pressure-vacuum breather valves are no longer required on all protected above-ground storage tanks, only those containing Class I flammable liquids.

Texas students achieve career opportunities through ICC program

Members of the Bluebonnet Chapter of the ICC in Texas presented achievement certificates to students at Texas State Technical College who completed and passed the International Residential Code building and energy exam. Instructors Michael Carillo and Tony Chaffin added the Certificate of Achievement program into the Building Construction Technology courses to help provide their students with career opportunities. City of Waco Inspection Supervisor Bobby Horner, International Code Council Board Director Shirley Ellis and Building Officials Association of Texas Board Member Mike Olson provided additional support and encouragement to the students. With the motivation and inspiration from these leaders, the High School Technical Training Program is expected to grow in Texas.

New combo designation: Certified Sustainability Professional

The International Code Council is set to launch a Certified Sustainability Professional (CSP) designation on July 1. The CSP was designed to provide portability for professionals holding ICC and/or California certifications to show proficiency and interest in sustainability across the nation without having to obtain another license or designation.
