ICC supports stronger, tougher, flood-ready infrastructure standards

Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria are the latest glaring examples of how vulnerable our country's infrastructure is to flood risk. The Code Council recently added its support for stronger and tougher flood-ready infrastructure standards in a letter sent to Trump administration officials on Sept. 25.

ICC board highlights from Columbus

In conjunction with ICC's 2017 Annual Conference in Columbus, Ohio, the ICC board of directors held a meeting on Sept. 9. and discussed a number of items, including approval of a Building Safety Service Provider work plan, 2018/2019 cycle revisions, Council Policy updates and committee appointments.

Call for presentations: 2018 ICC Annual Conference & Expo

Please join us in sharing your expertise at the 2018 ICC Annual Conference in Richmond, Va. ICC is seeking presentation proposals for its education sessions and Building Safety & Design Expo. All presentation topics should focus on providing educational and technical information to attendees on building code compliance, building safety, leadership and/or building technology. The deadline for application submittal is Jan. 31, 2018.

City of San Jose, Calif., receives 2017 ICC Community Service Award

The ICC Community Service Award recognizes meritorious service to promote public health, safety and welfare. This year, the ICC awards nominating committee presented two awards. The second recipient of the Community Service Award is the Building Department of the city of San Jose, Calif. The San Jose Building Department is well known for its innovative approach to community outreach and public education.

Karla Higgs honored for outstanding member and customer service

The ICC William J. Tangye Staff Recognition Award is granted by the chief executive officer to a staff member for recognition of meritorious service to ICC. This award is given in honor of William J. Tangye, the first chief executive officer of ICC, for his meritorious service to, and development of, ICC. The 2017 William J. Tangye Staff Recognition Award winner is ICC Member Services Vice President Karla Higgs.

Call for input on three ICC standards

The ICC Consensus Committees on Landscape Irrigation Emission Devices (IS-IEDC), Storm Shelters (IS-STM) and Residential High-Wind Construction (IS-RHW) will be developing the next edition of their respective standards, ICC 802-2014, ICC 500-2014 and ICC 600-2014. Suggested revisions or additions to the standards will be accepted until Oct. 20.

Watch live: ICC-ES Evaluation Committee public hearings

The ICC Evaluation Service (ICC-ES) Evaluation Committee meeting will be webcast live on Oct. 10 from Birmingham, Ala. The public hearing will cover new acceptance criteria for innovative products and materials and will offer building industry professionals unique insight into the acceptance criteria development process.

ICC helps BIASEW chapter celebrate 50-year anniversary

The Building Inspectors Association of South East Wisconsin (BIASEW) held its 50-year anniversary on Sept. 23 in Milwaukee, Wis. The BIASEW chapter was an idea presented by Gerald Schwerm in 1966 and the first meeting was held on Jan. 18, 1967, in Whitefish Bay, Wis. ICC Chief Executive Officer Dominic Sims, along with ICC Board member Jeff Bechtold and Government Relations Regional Manager Tim Schmitz, recognized the chapter's milestone at the event.

Schmidt: "We are only as strong as our communities' weakest link"

Amy Schmidt has been a valued member of the Corporate Advisory Board at the Alliance for National & Community Resilience (ANCR) and was recently appointed to ANCR's board of directors. She hopes to expand ANCR's reach and bring together more stakeholders concerned with community resiliency to develop the nation's first whole-community resilience benchmark.

ICC mourns loss of fire service leader Louis Amabili

The fire service community lost an icon on Sept. 28 with the passing of Louis J. Amabili. A member of the Congressional Fire Services Institute Board of Directors since 1994 and a member of the Delaware fire service since 1947, Amabili gained national recognition in the fire service when President Richard Nixon appointed him to serve on the National Commission for Fire Prevention and Control in 1970, which produced the landmark report, AMERICA BURNING.

ICC to weigh in on recent fire protection issues

Although many products and methods used for fire protection are well proven, there is a continual evolvement of materials, construction methods, technologies and environmental considerations. ICC Senior Staff Engineer Beth Tubbs will participate in a Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) session — Recent Fire Protection Events Forum — during the SFPE North America Conference & Expo: Accent on Fire Protection Engineering to be held on Oct. 11 in in Quebec, Canada. The session will explore the ever-changing world of fire protection issues as well as pathways to moving forward in fire research to make improvements in the regulatory environment.
