CSC Reviews Committee Applications,
Considers Emergency Amendments

Members of ICC's new Codes & Standards Council (CSC) held their first meeting earlier this month in Chicago. The new CSC was appointed by the ICC Board of Directors to review and approve new codes and standards projects, advise the Board regarding committee appointments, and review code development policies and procedures. At the meeting, CSC members reviewed 2012/2013 Code and Related Committee Applications and will make recommendations during the ICC Board meeting in Phoenix, where the Board will make appointments.
Also, the CSC considered proposed emergency bylaw amendments presented by the U.S. Chemical Safety Board concerning the use of combustible gas to clean pipes during power plant construction.

Membership Councils Charters
Available Online

Charters have been approved for four of the five newly created Membership Councils—Building Official, Fire Service, PMG Official and Sustainability (a charter for the ICC Global Membership Council is being developed). The charters will act as the rules under which Membership Councils will conduct business and contain objectives, guidelines on membership criteria, election of officers, and more.


ICC Code Action Committees
Discuss Logistics, Procedures

This year, ICC has funded the Code Action Committees (CAC) for all technical disciplines: Building Code Action Committee; Fire Code Action Committee; and Plumbing Mechanical, Fuel Gas Code Action Committee. The CACs met September 20-21 in Schiller Park, Illinois, to discuss logistics and procedures and activities for the 2012/2013 Code Cycle. Click to continue.


IFIA Executive Director Emeritus Presented Fire & Life Safety Award

George Michehl, Fire Marshal of the Buffalo Grove, Illinois, Fire Department and Executive Director Emeritus of the Illinois Fire Inspectors Association (IFIA) was the recipient of the 2011 Excellence in Fire & Life Safety Award sponsored by the Code Council and the Fire & Life Safety Section of the International Association of Fire Chiefs. ICC's Bruce Johnson (left) presented the award at the IAFC-FRI Conference.


New Webinar Is Starting Point for Learning the I-Codes

A new, two-part webinar from ICC is a starting point for those who are not very familiar with how the I-Codes are developed. The free webinar discusses the history and structure of the codes, enforcement, the ICC family of codes and the governmental consensus code development process used to create and update the I-Codes.


Residential Fire Sprinkler Installer Accreditation Enters Beta Phase

The Center for Public Safety Excellence (CPSE) announced the beta testing phase for the development of accreditation for residential dwelling fire sprinkler installers. CPSE's partners in the development of the accreditation are actively engaged in the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) charged with building the model and process. Click to continue.


 


  2011 ICC Board of Directors Candidates Announced
Letters of intent, bios/resumes and support letters are available for candidates running for the Code Council's Board of Directors in accordance with CP20-03. Elections will be held during the Council's Annual Business Meeting in Phoenix, Arizona. There will be several opportunities to meet and greet the candidates during ICC's 2011 Annual Conference.   2011 Final Action Hearings Schedule Announced
The 2011 Final Action Hearings Schedule for the International Green Construction Code (IgCC) and International Swimming Pool and Spa Code (ISPSC) is now available. The hearings will be held in conjunction with the Code Council's Annual Conference in Phoenix. The ISPSC hearings will start on Monday, October 31, at 1 p.m. The IgCC hearings will not start until 1 p.m. on Wednesday, November 1.
 

  Don't Miss the ICC Expo at the 2011 Annual Conference
More than 70 product manufacturers, trade associations and companies in the construction industry will present their products and services during the ICC Expo at the Code Council's 2011 Annual Conference and Final Action Hearings in Phoenix. The ICC Expo, scheduled for October 31-November 1, will feature Opening Night, sponsored by Delmar Cengage Learning and Hoover Treated Wood Products, and prize drawings, sponsored by Delmar Cengage Learning, for attendees during the Exhibitors' Reception sponsored by Underwriters Laboratories and ICC-ES.

  New York Mourns Loss of Inspector Who Dies While Assessing Irene Damages
Talk to most anyone in Rye, New York, and they will tell you city Building Inspector Vinny Tamburro was a pillar of the community, a gentle giant whom anyone could count on and a devoted family man who couldn't get enough of his wife and kids. So large a man was Tamburro it took a major storm to deprive his family and friends of his warm smile and seemingly unending patience. Tamburro died of a heart attack August 31 while assessing storm damage from Hurricane Irene.
 

  Robert W. Palchanis Fondly Remembered
The building code community was saddened to hear of the loss of Bob Palchanis, a long-time Southern Building Code Congress International (SBCCI)/International Code Council (ICC) Member and former Board President of the Building Officials Association of Florida (BOAF). He passed away peacefully at home on June 3 in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, after a brief illness. He was 79.
"Bob was a mentor to me and many others," said Code Council Chief Operating Officer Dominic Sims. "Bob knew the needs of the industry and gave young inspectors and plans examiners opportunities to learn and grow. He was adamant about 'professionalism' and participation in local and state Chapter activities." Click to continue.

  Colleague Sends Farewell Message to Fellow ICC Member John Neff
Imad Eldurubi, Deputy Building Official for Willdan, Arizona, wrote a farewell message to his friend and fellow ICC Member John Neff (pictured left) following his recent death. Neff served as the Building Official for the city of Lacey, Washington, for 23 years before retiring in May 2010. He previously served as the Building Official for Douglas County, Washington, and as a Building Inspector for Chelan County, Washington.
Neff was a was a former board member of the Washington Association of Building Officials, former chair and member of the Washington State Building Code Council, and was a member of the World Organization of Building Officials.

2006 IBC Performing Structural Plan Reviews
This course provides a procedure for reviewing construction documents based on the International Building Code (IBC). Participants will have the opportunity to practice a structural plan review using actual construction documents and a plan review record. Upon completion, participants will be better able to: perform the steps in completing a structural plan review; apply the 2006 IBC to the plan review procedure; and identify where minimum code requirements have not been met and cite applicable code sections.

  IAS Accreditation Committee Meeting Set for October 7
The next IAS accreditation committee meeting will be held October 7 at the Doubletree by Hilton Los Angeles in Norwalk, California, to establish or revise accreditation criteria pertaining to IAS accreditation programs. Attendance is open to the public—no meeting reservations are required—and provides all interested parties with the opportunity to contribute ideas or voice opinions on the posted agenda items.
 
  SNICC Donation Supports ICCF's Code of Honor Scholarship Program
The International Code Council Foundation (ICCF) recognized the Southern Nevada Chapter of ICC (SNICC) for its donation to the Foundation's Code of Honor Scholarship Program. The Scholarship Program ensures that the I-Codes continue to reflect the consensus view of officials at all levels of government by providing funding to Governmental Member Voting Representatives seeking to attend Final Action Hearings. In 2010, the Foundation awarded 68 individuals with scholarships to attend the Dallas and Charlotte Final Action Hearings. Scholars represented 27 states and the Cayman Islands.
