Code Council and SRCC Finalize Consolidation
The International Code Council and the Solar Rating & Certification Corporation (SRCC) have completed a period of due diligence and formalized the consolidation of the two associations. The SRCC is now part of the ICC Group that includes the ICC-Evaluation Service (ICC-ES) and the International Accreditation Service (IAS). The work of the SRCC complements the work of ICC in its standards, research, publications and product certification. The ICC has been working with SRCC to update its widely accepted 100 and 300 solar thermal collector and system standards.

Codes and Standards Development, Member Services Remain ICC Focus
The International Code Council entered into its second decade as a consolidated association with a continued focus on the development of codes and standards. The Code Council also took a renewed approach to serving its Members through the reengineering of its certification and training offerings and the introduction of the new Preferred Provider Program. The ICC Group, which includes the ICC Evaluation Service and the International Accreditation Service, expanded in 2014, as well, through the consolidation with the Solar Rating & Certification Corporation. Jones Appointed to WOBO Board of Governors
Code Council Board of Directors Immediate Past President Stephen D. Jones, CBO, has been appointed to the World Organization of Building Officials (WOBO) Board of Governors. Jones, a WOBO Member since 2008, said he plans to use the appointment as an opportunity to help build a stronger working relationship between ICC and the international association. "It is my hope that my experience as a code professional as well as my involvement at the national level in the development of codes will serve the WOBO membership well," Jones said. A licensed code official in the state of New Jersey since 1988, Jones currently serves as the construction official for the Township of Millburn/Short Hills and Borough of Florham Park.

Bradley County (Tenn.) Commission Gets Lesson in Building Standards
The Bradley County Commission received a primer at its last meeting on building codes from one of the men in charge of developing those standards used throughout the country. Mel Cosgrove, senior regional manager of the International Code Council, gave a power point presentation on the Council and its history, adding why the adoption of codes are important to a community. "With codes, you have safer buildings," Cosgrove said. "You reduce deaths, injuries and property damage. It promotes a predictable playing field. Codes put everybody on a level playing field."

Get Training from the ICC Preferred Provider Network
Check out all the training options offered through ICC's Preferred Provider Program and plan your training for 2015! You can easily access information about educational offerings and other services of Preferred Providers through the online listing of available onsite and online educational courses. Users can earn ICC CEUs from Preferred Providers, which can be applied toward ICC's certification renewal requirements. Beginning in 2015, 20 percent of the CEUs required for certification renewal must be earned from training by ICC or an ICC's Preferred Provider. As the Preferred Provider Program continues to expand, beginning in July 2016, 50 percent of CEUs will then be required through the PPP. 2015 I-Code Downloads Include New PDF/Redline Version
In addition to receiving a standard PDF showing the code in a two-column format that follows the printed book, purchasers of any 2015 International Code PDF Download will also receive the code in ICC's new Redline format. The Redline version uses red and blue fonts, strikeout, and underline to show deletions and revisions from the 2012 edition. This valuable tool will help any code user quickly spot changes and determine the specifics of each change. The 2015 I-Code downloads are compatible with all devices, including mobile tablets and smart phones.

Deadline for Group A Proposed Code Changes Is Jan. 12, 2015
ICC's 2015/2016/2017 Code Development Cycle begins with the Group A International Codes. This is the first full cycle to use cdpACCESS, the new cloud-based system for code development. A change to section 3.3.5.6 of Code Council Policy 28 also is new in this cycle that addresses cost impacts of code change proposals. Proponents are now required to substantiate the cost impacts and, if not provided, the proposals will be considered incomplete and not processed. Read more. ICC is accepting proposed changes to the Group A I-Codes through midnight Pacific on Jan. 12. All proposals should be submitted through cdpACCESS.

Significant Changes to the 2015 International Residential Code
The requirement for one habitable room with a minimum floor area of 120 square feet has been removed from the code. A 70-square-foot minimum area now applies to all habitable rooms as the smallest acceptable size for occupants to move about and use the habitable space as intended. Proponents of minimalist living have advocated smaller dwellings (tiny houses) to reduce environmental impact and provide for lower living costs. These dwellings are intended to allow for a minimalist lifestyle that doesn't demand large volumes of living space.

Renowned Codes Expert, Advocate and "True Professional" Ron Burton Passes Away
William Ronald "Ron" Burton, a renowned codes expert who was a key advocate for the International Code Council and its strategic partners in the building safety industry, passed away Nov. 9 of a sudden heart attack. He was 67. Burton spent the past 30-plus years serving the industry in various codes-related positions with the Building Owners & Managers Association International, the National Association of Home Builders, and as a successful private consultant. The ICC Honorary Member was an instrumental figure during the Code Council consolidation and over the years served on numerous committees.
