Public Comment Hearings results available; OGCV to open Nov. 8.

The results from the 2016 Public Comment Hearing to the ICC Group B International Codes held in Kansas City, Mo., is now available. The start date for the Online Governmental Consensus Vote that follows the Public Comment Hearing is slated to open Nov. 8.

Massachusetts joins states adopting the Energy Rating Index option.

The state of Massachusetts adopted the Energy Rating Index option as a compliance option to its residential energy building codes and adopted a RESNET Home Energy Rating System (HERS) as an Approved Alternative Energy Performance Method. There are now 12 states that have adopted the Energy Rating Index option.

A stranger's selfless gift leads to love.

Acts of great kindness are done without expectation, and oftentimes a code official's dedication to safety and welfare knows no bounds. Enter our hero, Chris Dempsey, code enforcement officer for the village of Frankfort, Ill., whose good deed helped him save a life. When Chris decided to donate an organ to a random stranger, he had no idea he was saving his own future wife.

A Delegation of governmental ministers, professors and construction professionals from Peru, and representatives from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the International Code Council visited the Building Division of the city of Anaheim, Calif., to get a better understanding of U.S. building department operations, processes and procedures, specifically relating to using wood in construction.

New study to examine disaster mitigation & code use to reduce risk.

The National Institute of Building Sciences Multihazard Mitigation Council — with support from FEMA, the International Code Council, and IBHS — is starting a new study to look at the cost effectiveness of disaster mitigation efforts in the public sector, as well as the benefits of using codes to mitigate the impact of natural disasters in the private sector.

Code essentials on cylinder valve protection.

To protect a cylinder from becoming a flying projectile, the International Fire Code requires cylinder valves be protected when they are moved or are in storage. Valve protection is accomplished by either shielding the valve or installing a protective cap. If a cylinder is not constructed with a valve shield, it is equipped with a protective valve cap.

As an International Code Council subsidiary, the International Accreditation Service (IAS) accredits companies and organizations, including governmental entities, commercial businesses and professional associations providing objective evidence that an organization operates at the highest level of ethical, legal and technical standards. Applications are being accepted for the IAS Board of Directors. Qualified individuals must be willing to participate and contribute in the governance of IAS by providing effective guidance on programs, activities and goals. The deadline for applications is Monday, Nov. 21, at 5:00 p.m. Central.

With all due respect to the Cleveland Indians and other baseball teams around the world, staff who are fans at ICC's Central Regional Office in Country Club Hills are rejoicing after the Chicago Cubs finally ended the curse of the billy goat Wednesday night and won the World Series for the first time in 108 years.
